Campaign: New Ways of Doing Business, New Tools...

DHS Policy on Social Media

With the recent DoD Memorandum on the Responsible and Effective Use of Internet-based Capabilities (http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/DTM-09-026.pdf) the Department of Defense has taken a proactive new stance which recognizes the impact and applicability of new media tools. DHS and the balance of the federal government must rapidly follow suit. While the log in for this site displays a link to Twitter and other social avenues, DHS employee’s are unable to connect. As businesses advertise opportunities on Facebook, the public uses Twitter to comment on DHS activities, and social media in general has proven vital in disaster response (notably in Haiti), the Department must recognize and allow access to this new collaboration toolset.
