In 2007 the Bush Administration signed executive order 13434 establishing the National Security Professional Development concept. Although this concept appeared in a recent GAO report and in the DoD QDR, little information on its implementation has been provided to the public. At the same time we still see that the interagency has challenges working together to achieve common goals (Christmas Bomber, for example). The NSP concept will build a cadre of interagency practitioners if properly implemented.
A non-for-profit professional society was created to help implement the concepts of EO 13434 but to a much broader audience – to include the private sector, military, state and local practitioners and academia. This group will also set the professional standard for interagency national security professionals through a rigorous certification program. To find out more visit www.sonsp.org.
DHS needs to implement the NSP concept throughout its workforce.
