TSA Security Policies

I work at an airport and have seen many different TSA policies as they are implemented. The policies are too broad. For example, A couple of years ago a policy was implemented for pilots to inspect the aircraft's external servicing panels before the first departure of the day. The problem is that different aircraft have access points that are not covered under this blanket policy and because of this they never get... more »

Preparation is Not a Dirty Word

DHS needs to put out comprehensive instructions for preparing for different disasters. Natural and man-made disasters occur someplace daily but those who would prepare are characterized as crazy people. The job of helping after any sort of disaster is improved if victim's are not in a state of total devestation. The only way that can be avoided is to prepare in advance. We Americans are not used to having to prepare,... more »

DHS Projects & Openness

By way of a ready example. I remember seeing a solicitation for http://www.darpa.mil/ipto/solicit/baa/BAA-08-20_PIP.pdf a project from DARPA called VIRAT (Visual Image Retrieval and Analysis Tool) The idea was they provided aerial footage that they wanted to be able to monitor and analyze from surveillance craft. The only difficulty is that if you wanted to give a shot at it as private citizen there was no way to do... more »

DHS should live webcast all meetings

The Department of Homeland Security should live webcast all meetings for proposed rule making and regulations where the public comment should take place. They should make these meetings available for on demand viewing and have the ability to have that content be indexed for video search. By doing this the public and stakeholders will be able to see the inner workings of the rule making process and make the content and... more »

TSA Refuses to Tell Me the Rules

A few months ago I asked an agent at the airport what is a safety razor and what are the rules regarding spare blades. He told me to contact someone through the TSA web site. I wrote the TSA. I explained why I wanted to change from a cartridge razor (they are becoming scarce as well as 3-5 blades on a razor cartridge is ludicrous and expensive). I asked about carrying extra blades and would single or double edge blades... more »

PLEASE REMOVE ' Off Topic' ideas from the open ideas

I think I like the idea of 'suggestion'type ideas to be moved to 'off-topic'

BUT I would like to see that those off-topic ideas be listed only under that "Off-Topic" category and NOT under the ideas that are currently being discussed.

So if possible see that only ideas relevant to the participation are shown / visible to users or contributors to this program

Off Topic?

I don't have a problem with removing "off-topic" posts and putting them in their own forum, but why shut down comments and voting on these posts? First of all, I don't think everyone agrees with the administrators' judgments of on-topic or off-topic posts and secondly, even if ideas start as slightly off-topic, they can lead to meaningful and helpful debate that relates to the topic at hand. Why shut down this... more »

Public/Private Industry Alliance

I believe that the DHS should maintain a List of Associations from a cross-section of industry. The industry associations on the List will have voluntarily chosen to be listed and the List made available to Congressional members at all times. The Listing is a method of contingency planning regarding a sudden and deep global financial downturn. Members of Congress will be able to enhance their view of the economic... more »

OpenDHS v2.0: Next Gen Opensource/OpenSocial Portal

A pilot project to build a next-gen DHS portal for the Federal Community Cloud. The idea is to build a suite of opensocial portals, one at each Federal Agency, based on The Open Stack that will enable communication with all opensocial partners.

Brainstorming and consultation

Have you ever thought that some citizens might have very valuable ideas and strategies to offer. People who have backgrounds and experiences that may have a different view on security situations to offer, take this example. A person who was born 1951 and grew up in N.Ireland amidst the conflict with the British army against the IRA, the UDR in conflict with Police, terrorist splinter groups at war between themselves and... more »

Transparency and Broader Collaboration

Although i posted this under Working Together ... it also relates to transparency in how DHS dollars are spent across the nation. Not just grant dollars, but contracts, MOUs, cost reimbursements and in-kind resource exchanges. DHS should identify all its MOU's, contracts, cost reimbursements, in-kind resource exchanges and grants that do not compromise national security so that American citizens in all sectors can... more »

Keep the topic visible

I am an emergency manager and a member of the Central Massachusetts Homeland Security Advisory Council so the self-improvement concept that lies behind these sessions is of critical importance. It is extremely frustrating to see so few posts being anywhere near on the current topic of how we can better involve NGOs, non-federal, and citizen groups in the defense of our homeland. When I look back at the web-set I notice... more »

Increased collaboration and problem solving

Many organizations have improved their operations a great deal by encouraging their employees to contribute improvement ideas. If it is made easy, fast and the ideas get implemented the majority of employees will have ideas to contribute. The DHS has a trained, experienced workforce, let's give them a way to contribute their ideas for improvement. Let's set an expectation that all DHS personnel will watch for opportunities... more »

National Planning Scenarios

I understand the history of the current DRAFT versions of national planning scenarios that were circulated for the past few years and that DHS has undertaken an effort to create new scenarios. This cannot be a DHS led initiative. DHS, State, and DoD need to work with the NSC and NIC to develop a set of realistic planning scenarios. Many of these scenarios, such as WMD Proliferation, are global threats and would cross... more »
